The Pearl Button | Dir. Patricio Guzman | Chile | 2015 | 1hr 22
Cost: FREE/Donations
Accessibility: Subtitled & with BSL Introduction

In this new documentary the craft of the renowned filmmaker Patricio Guzman invites us to experience both time and space as they emerge in human history, in simultaneously linear and non-linear ways. It focuses on events that have occurred along the magnificent and wild 600 mile Chilean coast line. The camera follows investigators as they dive into the depths of the ocean to find bodies of those tossed into the sea by the brutal Pinochet regime. Indigenous people who have always made their home there speak of how they are now forbidden from setting sail in their small boats. But weare emotionally held during these harrowing revelations by reflections on the power of the cosmos and the life giving properties of water.

It’s another hot day in Mumbai and like every day the fans are whirling in the Alfred Talkies – a B-Movie cinema – and literally behind the screen as the drama plays out Sheikh Rehman and his crew are creating original copies. Operating in the workshop manner of ‘old masters’ they hand paint huge publicity banners in oils for Bollywood films …only to paint over them 7 days later. An ode to the passions of cinema, art and life in a declining industry.

This screening is in honour to Prince on what would have been his 58th birthday on June 7th.

Based on aspects of Prince’s childhood and life we follow the “Kid” as the talented but troubled frontman of his band, The Revolution. Is he gonna echo the emotional and physical violence of his parents? Or is he gonna become a sensual, sexy, tender, genderfluid, expressive, rocktastic musical megastar?

Miss Major paradeMAJOR! | Dir. Annalise Ophelian | USA | 2016 | 1hr 30

*UK Premiere + Annalise Ophelian, Director & StormMiguel Florez, Editor/ Co-Producer will be present!

Cost: FREE/Donations

MAJOR! is a documentary film exploring the life and campaigns of Miss Major Griffin-Gracy – a veteran of the Stonewall Rebellion and a survivor of Attica State Prison, a former sex worker, an elder and a community leader and human rights activist. She is simply “Mama” to many in her community. Her radiant character strengthens those around her as they struggle and organise against police and prison brutality. If history is held within us, embodied in our loves and losses, then Miss Major is a living library, a resource for generations to come to more fully understand the rich heritage of the Queer/LGBT Rights movement.

She founded the renowned Transgender GenderVariant Intersex Justice Project (TGIJP) that advocates for trans women (+ GV & I) of colour in and outside of prison and we are delighted to have both StormMiguel Florez from the TGI Justice Project Leadership Team and the director of Major! Annalise Ophelian present to take questions/discuss at this screening.

Les_SaignantesLes Saignantes | Dir. Jean- Pierre Bekolo | Cameroon/France | 2005 | 93 mins

Cost: FREE/Donations for SWOU
Accessibility: Subtitled & with BSL Introduction

Two glamorous young friends and sex workers get stuck with a dead client who is also a high powered politician – no-one is going to believe their innocence so the most immediate question becomes – what to do with the body? But there are other pressing questions; embedded into the film is the Beti-ritual called Mevungu, which is traditionally performed by women’s secret societies, only in times of deep social crisis. Africa and particularly Cameroon, says Bekolo, is facing such a deep social crisis that it was high time to perform this ritual. Les Saignantes is the best African sci-fi vampire political satire with erotic overtones you’ve ever seen.

Nicknamed the ‘savage mountain’ K2 is considered by many mountaineers an even greater prize than Everest with limited routes, a steeper ascent, and a harder push to its summit. Pakistani porters and Nepalese sherpas enable ascents by western climbers whilst being paid rates far below those received by international expedition leaders. The film also follows the first official all-Pakistani climbing team, made up of former porters who successfully summited in 2014. Captures the toil, pride, craft, humour and heroism of indigenous climbers who risk their lives on the breathtakingly beautiful and perilous slopes of K2.
